Practically Imperfect in Every Way

Posted on October 23, 2015 by Jensie in About Slanted

According to my own editorial calendar (that I made) I’m supposed to be blogging today about SEO. When I saw that, the chunks kind of rose up in my throat and I decided that I’m not going there today.

Instead I think I’ll talk about fighting perfectionism. This week I launched The Profane Marketer Podcast. It’s been in the works for a while now, but I finally put it all out there. In all honesty, I’m TERRIFIED. When I listen to the episodes, all I hear are the imperfections and I can’t stop thinking about how there’s so much I need to change. Then I think about listeners and oh man, I can’t even go there. What if they hate it? What if they think I’m stupid? What if I’m not as funny as I think I am?

I have been a victim of the perfection bug in the past. I have never been one to try things when I know I won’t succeed. I’ve been working on that. Starting out on my own as a contractor and then launching Slanted, I’ve started to overcome some of my hesitations. When I talk to clients or other business owners, my advice to them is always “Just start.” Blogging, Facebook, videos, whatever, just start. It’s always going to be a process—and it’s time for me to start taking my own advice.

So I hope you like the new website, the blog posts, our social media content, and the podcast. I really do. But if you don’t, I’ll be okay. And if it all goes under from top to bottom, I’ll still be okay. And so will you if something doesn’t quite turn out the way you want it. Be honest with your followers, they like to know you’re human. What are you going to just put out there today? (And is a SUPER AWKWARD photo of you dressed up to go to an 80s party with your creeper of a spouse?)
